The Fall of Edo Castle Walkthrough
[1] Escape from Edo Castle.
Head to the marked location on your Compass with Kunimatsu.
Optional: Search corpses with glowing spirits to hear their final thoughts.
The two of you will encounter Munenori battling a Yokai. Help him defeat it to trigger a tutorial about Yokai Realm.

| Yokai Realm and Purifications | The Yokai Realm is a peculiar space where enemy Yokai are born. Human Ki recovery is greatly reduced here. Cleanse and dispel this Realm by executing a Ki Pulse while in Samurai Style. |
Take note that Yokai Realms are characteristically seen as swirling circles of blackened clouds.
[2] Defeat all the Yokai.
With the help of Munenori and Kunimatsu, defeat the incoming enemies while purifying the Yokai Realms. Afterward, you will learn more about Enemy Ki and the Grapple mechanic.

|---|---|
| Enemy Ki and Grappling | Depleting an Enemy's Ki to 0 allows you to deal significant damage with a Grapple. While humans recover Ki over time, Yokai cannot unless they are within a Yokai Realm (or under special circumstances). Strong Yokai can only be Grappled once their Maximum Ki is fully depleted; reduce this by destroying their glowing golden weak points. |
[3] Talk to Yagyu Munemori.
Munemori will instruct you to leave the Castle. He'll create an opening for you and Kunimatsu. Before parting ways, you'll borrow Guhin from him.
[4] Pray at the Shrine.
As you continue, you will find a Shrine.
These serve as checkpoints where you can recover Life and replenish your Elixirs, but using one causes defeated enemies to respawn. Keep in mind that you will return to the last Shrine you visited if you fall in battle.
[5] Make your way to the Underground Well.
After praying, head the other way and crouch to move through low passages.
There will be a quick tutorial on Jumping and Mid-air Jumping. Then, you'll see Hattori Hanzo fighting some Yokai. Climb down and help him out!
[6] Speak with Hattori Hanzo.
Once the enemies are taken care of, approach Hanzo to learn more about Ninja techniques.

|---|---|
| Style Shift | Use this feature to switch Styles and alter your approach in Battle. Samurai Style focuses on melee combat and aims to dish out greater damage through Arts Proficiency. Ninja Style focuses on agility and hit-and-run tactics that utilize Ninjutsu to strike enemies from a distance. |
[7] Use Style Shift to switch to Ninja Style.
Begin your training with Hanzo by switching styles!
[8] Select a Weapon.
Approach Hanzo's fallen men and choose from these Weapons:
| Weapon | Description |
|---|---|
| Sword | Balanced and easy to use. |
| Dual Sword | Overwhelm opponents with multiple moves. |
| Hatchet | Use throwing attacks to hit enemies from a distance. |
| Kusarigama | Deliver swift blows and extend your reach with the chain and counterweight. |
[9] Speak with Hattori Hanzo Again.
Talk to Hanzo when you've chosen your desired Weapon. After that, more Yokai will appear. Use them as your training dummies!

|---|---|
| Ninja Style Features | This Combat Style is characterized by swift movements and low Ki expenditure. When attacking enemies from behind, it deals more damage compared to the Samurai Style. Using Mist after an attack allows you to quickly evade without consuming Ki. Using this ability near enemies creates a shadow clone that temporarily draws their attention. The downside of Mist is that it cannot recover Ki or perform Purification like Ki Pulses. |
[10] Defeat All Enemies.
Continue battling the incoming enemies while practicing your unlocked Ninja Style. Try to use Ninjutsu to attack enemies from afar!

|---|---|
| Style Shift and Burst Break | Enemies will sometimes be surrounded in red aura, this means that there will be a Burst Attack. They can be repelled with Burst Breaks. When the timing is right, you will be able to cancel the enemy's attack, deal damage to their Life and Ki, and reduce a Yokai enemy's maximum Ki. You can separate the controls for Style Shift and Burst Breaks under the System tab in the Main Menu. |
[11] Continue Finding the Well.
Wait for Hanzo to lower the ladder. Before heading there, feel free to change your Weapon.
Kunimatsu will stay behind and help in defeating the Yokai that lingers in the area.
Climb the ladder and talk to Hanzo there. He will let Nekomata accompany you on your journey.
Jump down and unlock the nearby Shrine!
Be careful on your way to the Well, there are some Yokai lurking around.
[12] Enter the Underground Well.
SPOILER: As you dive down the Well, you'll meet Saito Fuku again. The reunion is short-lived as Tokugawa Kunimatsu betrays you, believing that he is the one fit to be shogun.
[13] Try to Defeat Tokugawa Kunimatsu.
Technically, Kunimatsu will be the first boss fight in Nioh 3. However, even if you try to deplete his life completely, you are meant to lose this battle.
There will be a cutscene where Kusanagi will save you, which will be the start of the "Ceremony - Part 2" Mission.
