Gaul is acting even more closed off than usual. Will his conversation with Murray give a hint to what is going on?
This is available after defeating the Feral Blangonga during The Sacrosanctum Main Quest and finishing Gaul Ch. 3 Side Story.
As A Friend (Gaul Ch. 4) Walkthrough
[1] Talk to Gaul at the base.
The player finds Murray and Gaul talking about a 'spiral'. Gaul tries to stop them from sticking their nose into his business, saying that this time, the player definitely will not come. The player tells Rudy to let Gaul go since he has the Fur-tive Five with him. (On an unrelated note, the player finally guesses the correct Felyne companion! Good for you, your highness!)
After Gaul leaves, Rudy remarks that something is off about Gaul and he seems grumpier than usual. He suggests that they follow him. The player shares his worries and decides to do so, but the only hint they have of his location is "Base of the Spiral"...Hmm, what could it be referring to?
[2] Follow Gaul.
Head to the bottom of the Egg Quarry. It's Maury and Manny, and they're injured?! Manny tries to keep them mum, but Maury slips that Gaul is at the 'next location'. The player does not press further, respecting their loyalty to Gaul, however, as Gaul's captain, no - as Gaul's friend, they want to make sure that Gaul is safe. Manny gives in and recites a hint for the location: "The stone tabletop faces the distant watchtower".
Go to Rococo Rocks. Merry and Milly are similarly found injured at the site. Milly doesn't give any coincrete details but urges the player to go to the Glacial Caps.
Head to Serathis to find an injured Murray. He explains that Gaul is in pursuit of a Vermeilian assassin. They were originally able to raid the camp, but the last foe they faced was a challenge, and now Gaul is on his own, fighting the enemy. The last message from the assassins indicating their camps was "The ice-capped citadel". Murray believes that where Gaul most likely is.
[3] Find Gaul and the assassin.
Travel north and find Gaul. The assassin reveals that the target all along was the player! Gaul is upset that the player came, but the player stands firm that Gaul is their friend and will always want to help him out. They're not going anywhere, especially not when they're against this foe.
Help Gaul defeat the Honed Glavenus!
After the battle, the team confront the assassin. He tries to fight back but the Fur-tive Five show up and scare him away!
Gaul then scolds the player, saying that the next-in-line to royalty shouldn't be putting their life on the line. The player says that they are very well aware of their station, but they wouldn't be them if they ever decided to leave their friend behind. They compare their relationship with Gaul to that of their fathers, which leaves Gaul speechless.
Murray asks that the player won't be too harsh on Gaul, since they have had to fend off so many assassins that it has now taken a toll on them. Gaul is very dedicated to the crown and considers keeping the heir safe is keeping the future of Azuria safe. At the same time, Gaul feels happy to be a close, personal friend of the player. (Oh Murray, really just putting Gaul's heart out there).
The player isn't sure if they're worthy of the throne, but they at least hope to always have a friend like Gaul by their side.
