Rangifer Boss Guide
[1] The boss encounter is split into two separate fights.
The first battle occurs within the sunken city. After reducing its health below 50%, it will roar and cover the battlefield with a yellow blighted haze. This does not seem to do anything or affect the battle.
Upon depleting its health, it will retreat towards its lair hidden deep within the sprawling forest. You will have to complete a side quest that involves collecting three colored keys to unlock the door leading to its lair.
[2] Exploit its weakness against fire.
You can determine an enemy's weakness to a certain type of attack or ailment by looking at the icon to the left of its HP and Down gauge. This particular Nushi is weak against fire.
Use Koo's Higanbana Skill: Seeds to quickly apply burn to the boss. Filling the burn meter will stagger Rangifer, interrupting its attacks and leaving it vulnerable.
[3] Learn its attack pattern and parry to replenish FP.
During the first battle, Rangifer's attacks can be divided into three moves. Take your time to learn these to successfully parry and gain FP for executing Bloom Arts and Blade Skills.
The boss swings its large wooden antlers from side to side, with the attack varying between one, two, or three consecutive swings. Despite the range, these have clear telegraphs and long windups.
Rangifer lowers its head before charging toward its target. The actual charge itself does not deal damage, as it stops upon reaching its target. It then plunges its antlers into the ground before tossing rubble toward the player. The incoming debris can be blocked or parried.
When it leans to the side, the boss briefly fires three consecutive spiked projectiles at the player. These travel quickly, making the timing window for parrying quite narrow.
Koo's Higanbana: Roots can sometimes interrupt boss attacks, preventing them from fully executing the move.
Upon filling its Down Gauge, the boss will stagger and fall to the ground, leaving it vulnerable for a long period.
[4] A rematch in its lair.
The final fight against the Nushi takes place deep within its habitat. While it retains its previous moves, it gains several new attacks. This battle is also split into two phases.
Watch out for its erupting root strike. Rangifer briefly roars before slamming its head on the ground, creating a row of erupting roots that travel toward the player.
Wait for the light flash to appear with certain attacks before evading to perform a perfect dodge.
Its front hooves glow before it performs either of its two hoof attacks: A jumping smash or a frontal slam.
The boss also gains a unique glowing state. When this happens, it will follow up with a four-hit antler swing combo before finishing with a massive AoE hoof strike.
After its HP is depleted, Rangifer appears to fall in battle before to suddenly reviving with a mysterious surge of energy. Its appearance changes and its flowers start to bloom, marking the start of the final phase.
It does not gain any new abilities during this phase and only restores its full health. Keep track of its attack patterns and finish the fight.
