Onimusha Way of the Sword_The Demon on the Mount

The Demon on the Mount Summary

Musashi and Okuni return to Takamura, where they learn that Dokyo sent a message from the same village the two girls ran off from. Musashi heads to Mount Oe, where he learns about the dreaded betrayal that took place there, and about how strong he, himself, really is.

The Demon on the Mount Walkthrough

[1] Speak with Takamura

When you are ready, return to Rokudo Temple and enter Takamura's chambers to begin the next quest. Okuni arrives and informs the crew that villagers are being kidnapped in Mount Oe.

image.png

Takamura reveals they received intel about the kidnappings from Dokyo herself, who sent a letter. While they do not know what is going on there, Musashi decides to go and hopefully end Dokyo for good.

image.png

[2] Investigate Mount Oe

Head towards the Spirit Mirror. Mount Oe is now unlocked to you. Select it to fast travel there.

image.png

The path ahead is linear for now. Travel up the mountain trail according to the map to continue. Mushashi eventually finds what is your destination, a castle where Shizuka detects Genma's presence.

image.png

Continue on the mountain trail. You will eventually come upon a wooden gate with a nearby Spirit Mirror. Unlock it and open the gate to proceed.

image.png

[3] Search the area around the abandoned building

Shizuka suggests going inside the abandoned building to go through. Take the door up ahead to enter.

Inside, you will find another door at the back, but it will not open from your side. Inside, climb up the stairs to the second floor.

image.png

On the second floor, Musashi and Shizuka sense some Genma. Two then ambush Musashi: two from the new enemy type, Oboro Garasu or Raven Wraith.

image.png

[4] Defeat the Genma

These new Genma are particularly tricky. They can jump to dodge your attacks and are harder to Issen. Time your parries and counterattacks right, though, and they are not much of a problem.

image.png

[5] Search the area around the abandoned building

After killing the Genma, open the door at the end of the room. Continue on up the trail. There will be Genma on your way, so be sure to have your sword ready. You will eventually find the gate covered in threads, preventing you from proceeding from there.

image.png

[6] Sever the threads at the source

Find the two spiders that are connected to the threads.

[7] Head beyond the abandoned building

The gate should now be cleared, allowing you to open it. Return to the platform where you Oni Walked on, and return to the other platform with the ladder. Climb up and open the gate. Continue onwards to the Valley.

In this new area, there is also a Spirit Mirror. Unlock it and continue onwards.

image.png

[8] Attack the Genma Fort

Looks like the bridge is drawn, and there are Genma afoot. Draw your bow and shoot at the glowing lock that is keeping the bridge drawn.

image.png

Cross the bridge, and you will find Genma around. Shoot them with your bow if you can so you do not have to deal with them later.

Keep going until you find another hoisted-up drawbridge. Climb down the ladder to the left of the drawn bridge. Walk a bit away from the bridge and look up. There is another glowing lock. Shoot it to bring the bridge down.

image.png

Climb back up to the bridge and continue onwards. There is a gate that is blocked, so take the left path to find the way past it. In the torchlit room with Genma, climb up the ladder to approach the platform overlooking the gate.

image.png

Shizuka mentions some explosives that can be used on the gate. Use your Oni Vision to highlight them. Next, draw your bow and fire at the barrels to blast the gate open. After blowing it up, take the platform on the right to proceed.

image.png

Past the gate is a path leading to a cave pier. There is a way forward to the right in a cave, but there are more Genma—both in the water and in the cave, so be alert.

Head into the cave, and at the crossroads, turn left to continue.

The Genma in the campfire will not notice you until you are close enough or you aggro them. There will also be some in the water once you have dealt with them. When you are done, shoot the glowing lock on another drawbridge to bring it down. Cross the bridge to continue.

image.png

Continue onwards and eventually you will find a Spirit Mirror. Unlock it to enable the fast travel point.

image.png

Past the cage that you can Oni Walk on, take the wooden bridge to the left. The wooden gate is just used to gain an exit point for a collectible.

In the area past the wooden bridge, you can see a door. However, like the wooden gate, it is barred. Keep note of this door as it is important later.

image.png

Look for the highlighted crank handle. It will move the cages near you so you can Oni Walk across. Also, there is an Archer Genma on the other side. Just use the explosive near it to get rid of it.

image.png

After Oni Walking across, more of those Raven Genma will appear. Make use of the nearby explosives to deal with them. There is another Archer Genma sniping from atop a platform with a ladder. Deal with it first, and afterwards climb up to the abandoned building next to it.

Head down to the lower floors of the building and clear out the Genma inside. Open the closed door to exit outside.

Outside, look for a ladder that leads you to an elevated platform. Once you are there, turn around, and you will see that there is another drawbridge that is locked. Shoot the lock to bring the bridge down.

image.png

Return to the second floor of the abandoned building, where you will be ambushed by the Raven Genma.

After dealing with them, exit through the open doorway that leads to a wooden ramp, that is where the bridge fell from.

Take the ladder past the draw bridge that leads you to the roof. Take care of the two Genma there, one on the ground and an archer on a ledge, and then take the path connected to the roof.

image.png

[9] Look for a way to destroy the gate

In front of you is a gate that you do not have access to. Shizuka then wonders if you can blow that one up like the last one. Hop on the cages and then Oni Walk across the cave walls.

This will take you back to the other side just behind the locked door near the crank handle. Attack the lock to unlock it. You now have a way across without needing the cages to Oni Walk on.

image.png

As Shizuka suggests, return to the crank handle to move the cages to a new location.

image.png

Instead of taking the cages, go through the door you just unlocked to return to the other side.

Hop onto the lower cage to access the wooden scaffolding hugging the walls.

At the end of the path, turn to your right and you can see some explosive barrels. Draw your bow, fire an arrow, and the gate will be opened to you.

image.png

Oni Walk on the cages to the left. Take the now-opened path to enter the next area, the Castle Courtyard.

image.png

[10] Head for the mountain castle

There is an elevator that leads you to the castle. First, unlock the Spirit Mirror to enable fast travel.

image.png

Take the elevator down, then take the path to the left on the map to head to the castle.

In the second clearing, there is an Oni Armament nearby. Take the tight entrance to your right to slide through the cave.

image.png

Inside is a chest! Open it and you find your new armament, the Flashing Void.

image.png

Exit the cave and continue the path to the wooden bridge connected to the castle.

There, the Gatekeeper refuses to let Musashi in. He says that the Oni, Shuten Doji, does not let anyone else in except for a monk who gives him his food and booze. Looks like Dokyo is not in this mountain this time. Musashi then decides to look for the monk to gain access to the castle.

image.png

[11] Look for the monk

Take the bridge on your left to proceed. There will be a Torii gate at the end with a nearby Spirit Mirror. Unlock it and take the path past the gate. The gate on the left is locked, anyway.

image.png

On the way up, Musashi hears a man crying for help. He will find a man being kidnapped by Genma. Defeat them and after they are gone, talk to the man to continue.

image.png

[12] Head for the watermill at the summit

Climb further up the mountain, and you find a guarded fort with Genma Archers. Pick them off one at a time with your bow. There will also be some Genma who will attack you on foot. Use the nearby explosives to kill them in one hit.

After dealing with them, head to the wooden gate up ahead. This will lead you to the inside of the fort.

image.png

Storming this fort will not be easy. Genma are around on the ground and on elevated walkways. Always keep an eye on your rear and above, or else Archer Genma will make you a pincushion.

Climb up the wooden ramps to find your path forward, which is another gate blocked by threads.

image.png

[13] Sever the threads at their source

There is only one spider that is blocking your way this time. To go to its location, head left and Oni Walk across. This will lead you to the path to the other side of the fort.

image.png

Two civilians will need saving on your way. One in the shack near where you just leapt, and another in a shack in the fort. Save them both.

On the roof of the second shack, the path to the spider is connected to the back of the roof. On the left path is the Malice Barrier blocking you from the gate. Open it since you are here and then follow the right path to a ladder. You can see from there that the threads are connected somewhere in that area.

image.png

Drop down and enter the gate. To enter the building, take the ladder in front of the wooden gate. The walkway there leads to a door to the building. You will also hear another man needing help. Search the house to find him.

Get through this little maze of boxes to find a hole to the bottom floor. Fall through it and save the man from the Genma.

Open the door near the man. Behind it is the spider. Kill it and the thread blockade will disappear.

image.png

[14] Seal the Rift

Exit through that doorway. When you do, a rift will spawn above you. Take care of it to proceed.

image.png

[15] Head for the watermill at the summit

Find the ladder to your right, climb it, and take the path back to the gate. Open it and now you can head into the next area. By now you are probably as sick of this mountain as Musashi is. Unlock the Spirit Mirror on your way out.

image.png

A large bundle of logs will block your exit to the next area. Use your Oni Strength as instructed to push them out of your way.

image.png

Approach the fort, and the Genma will notice your arrival. They decide it's their turn to use the environment against you and release large logs to trample Musashi.

image.png

[16] Attack the Genma Fort

You have two options to get rid of the logs. First, you can time your Oni Strength correctly and deflect the logs. Or, you can find a wall and Oni Walk to avoid them. The latter is especially useful against the flaming logs.

image.png

Get through the first wave of logs and run to the left side. There is a path that will let you circle to a ladder to the upper grounds.

mountain stream left path.jpg

Take the ladder up and then cross the bridge to the other side. Be aware of any Genma that will get in your way.

On the other side, at the foot of the right side of the wooden bridge, is another pile of logs. Use Oni Strength to launch them out of your way.

image.png

Cross the bridge and take the wooden path leading back to the rolling logs. Remember to time your Oni Strength and use the Oni Walk when possible.

Hug to the left side to take the ladder that will lead you to the upper ground. Climb the ledges to get to the other side. Be alert for any Archers that will try to shoot you.

image.png

Clear out the Genma on the other side. Once you do, look for a pile of logs that are overlooking the wall where the rolling logs are coming from. You know what to do: use Oni Strength and fire those logs at the wall.

image.png

[17] Head to the waterfall at the summit

The logs have stopped now, so drop down to the lower grounds and cross the broken wall. Take the path to the left and continue on the trail.

image.png

You will find a cottage at the end of the path where Musashi will start smelling something the booze mixed with blood. Shizuka assumes it is coming from the building. Open it and you find what he's smelling.

image.png

[18] Absorb the dark mass

Inside the building is a blotch of dark mass; absorb it, and you will see dark mass vestiges of what happened in this "winery."

image.png

Turns out that the monk you are looking for is all too pleased with making this wine, sacrificing the villagers and mixing their blood into the drinks.

image.png

[19] Head after the monk

Look for a wooden door flush against the mountain wall. Approach it and the doors will automatically open. This is an elevator that will take you to the next area.

Inside the cave, there is a Spirit Mirror. Unlock it and continue.

image.png

[20] Investigate the underground cell

Head inside and you find a prison for the kidnapped villagers. Take the forward path and head to the farthest prison cell to the left and you will be prompted to find a way to save the prisoner.

image.png

[21] Look for a way to help the villager

Find that opening in the wall between two cells. Genma will walk through it so take care of them before continuing.

image.png

Oni Walk on the walls. Just keep going until you reach the end of where you can Oni Walk. You will land on a cell and hear the villager be taken out of his cell.

Find the crawlspace to your left and then take the narrow path to slide out of the cells.

image.png

You will happen upon the cell with the Malice Barriers. Pry them open.

image.png

[22] Defeat the Genma

Outside the cell, the Genma are trying to take the villager. Defeat them!

image.png

Talk to the villager after the Genma are dealt with. In gratitude, he will give you a Dungeon Key he stole from them. You can now use that to open the other locked cells.

image.png

[23] Head after the monk

Head back down to the lower grounds and take the wooden bridge on the other side. Open the locked gate with the Dungeon Key.

image.png

Head down the path. The room up ahead is flooded with Dense Malice on the ground. You will have to power through them to explore this area.

Follow the map to find the way to the next area. At the end of the path is another exit covered with threads again.

image.png

[24] Sever the threads at their source

There are two spiders in this area again, but they will need to be destroyed in sequence.

Hop down from the ledge and turn left to find a ladder. Climb it and search the corner to your right. You will find the spider there, framed by the broken fence nearby a torch. Draw your bow and kill it.

cave spider 1.jpg

The threads connected to the first spider will disappear, and the rocks blocking your path will drop. Hop onto the ledge and turn the nearby crank to move the cages around like in the Valley.

image.png

Oni Walk on the cages to head to the cave in the wall lit up by a torch.

Drop down at the end of the cave and continue on the trail. At the end, enter the left path and turn to the left corner.

At the end of that path is the spider. Kill it, and then the blockage will be gone.

image.png

[25] Head after that monk

Now we just have to get to the exit. Drop down and return to the area with the crank. Turn the crank again to reposition the cages. Now you can Oni Walk on the cages and then onto the wall to exit this area.

image.png

Past the exit, you will find a suspiciously large circular clearing...Probably nothing! Head on in when you are ready.

image.png

[26] Seal the Rift

Uh oh, looks like it's another Rift. You know the drill. Seal the rift to continue.

image.png

Upon clearing the last wave, however, a mini boss will spawn from the rift, Dohatsu-ten. You need to defeat him to seal the rift.

image.png

Once that annoyance is gone, seal the rift and you can continue.

[27] Absorb the dark mass

Climb the latter and enter the room ahead. There is another dark mass. Absorb it to see what happened here.

image.png

Turns out much of last time really, only this time we now know just how twisted that so-called "monk" really is.

image.png

[28] Head after that monk

Continue to the room ahead and unlock the Spirit Mirror.

image.png

Head outside and you will return to the Castle Courtyard area. In a nearby shack, you will also find that monk pacing around, mentioning a girl who ran off. Musashi doesn't waste a second; he kills the monk in no time flat.

image.png

Turns out, that monk was not even human—he was another Oni. Whatever it means, it also means his clothes are free for the taking.

image.png

Musashi disguises himself as the Monk and returns to the gate. The gatekeeper tells him that what Shuten Doji was mainly after was a girl, the same one the monk mentioned, who is the "prettiest girl in the village." Gross.

image.png

Luckily for Musashi, Okuni joins them after getting bored back at the temple. She offers to play the part of the pretty girl, much to Musashi's disbelief. The gatekeeper lets them in, asking Musashi to avenge the village.

image.png

Inside, the Genma are having a feast, so much so that they fail to notice a few of them get their heads sliced off by Musashi.

image.png

Shizuka recognizes Shuten Doji as another Oni named Ura. Musashi then taunts the Genma, pointing out he is too stupid to realize Dokyo and Yoshitsune are just using him. Enraged, Shuten Doji attacks Musashi.

image.png

[29] Defeat Shuten Doji

Shuten Doji is a big, brutish boss with a gourd he drinks from. Being big, this means his main attacks are swinging that sword of his and, for some reason, kicking you with his relatively short legs. He is, however, a fire Oni and will use fire to attack. He will also use his gourd, which can heal him.

image.png

Shuten Doji also has a second phase, lighting himself on fire and being able to breathe it. To defeat him, deflect and parry his sword strikes but dodge his fire and kicks.

image.png

Musashi is then able to cut off his head. While he leaves thinking he won, Shuten Doji turns out to have a third phase (which you must have realized, as the link to his boss fight isn't here yet).

image.png

Now he fights with both his fiery head and headless body. His body has the same attack pattern, but enhanced with fire, and his head can also spew flames. Luckily, both his body and head share the health bar, so swing at either one. You will notice that the game UI is absent for this part; don't worry, this is a scripted fight.

image.png

After enough damage, Musashi falls, and Shuten Doji taunts how weak he is. Musashi acknowledges that he is weak, but says his friends are not. He calls upon the souls of the Oni, promising to slay the Genma and Yoshitsune.

The Oni Gauntlet then unleashes a new power for him to use: Devil Trig—er, Oni Awakening. Use this new power to defeat Shuten Doji!

image.png

Oni Awakening
An Onimusha's Ultimate Form. Usable when the Awakening Gauge is full. When in this form, damage is instead inflicted to your Awakening Gauge.

With his new power, granted by the Oni, Musashi defeats Shuten Doji. The trio then return to Rokudo Temple, where Musashi recognizes that relying on others is not a weakness.

image.png

Lady Murasaki then interrupts the group. She needs help back at Yasaka Shrine.
