Fragrance of Things Past Summary
There are mysterious footsteps around Carter and Mao's house. To help put Carter's mind at ease, Elliot will investigate what they are. They turn out to be the graves of Mao's parents, and Carter and Mao honor her parents with Kiwiberries, which they swear will be a fragrance that binds their family.
How to Unlock Fragrance of Things Past
You must have completed the Doorway Ruins dungeon during the Age of Magic.

Fragrance of Things Past Walkthrough
[1] Go to Mao's House in the Age of Magic
Travel to Mao's House in Southern Whiterea and speak with Carter. Mao and Carter welcome Elliot heartily. The family is all doing well, and Carter does have something he wants to show Elliot.
He shows Elliot the baby crib he's making. Elliot says the baby will absolutely love it, but then notices some strange animal footprints around it. Carter asks him to investigate things before anything happens, and he agrees to do so.
[2] Follow the Footprints to the Eastern Caves
Follow the footprints to the cliff behind the house.
You'll eventually find that the footprints lead to the Eastern Caves.
[3] Exit through the northern end of the Eastern Caves
Enter the cave and keep following the footprints. Defeat all the monsters in the way.
The footprints will lead to a ladder that's incomplete.
Use Warp to teleport to the nearby crystal. Activate it so you can climb the ladder.
[4] Investigate the Footprints
When Elliot exits the cave, he'll find a cat made the footprints. It's also looking at two piles of rocks. The cat leaves when it notices him, and Elliot elects not to chase it. Now it's time to return to Carter.
[5] Return to Carter
Return to Carter. Elliot will be happy to tell Carter it was just a cat. Asking about the piles of rocks, Mao tells them those are her parents' graves. She used to visit them often, but she found the memories too painful. She thinks the cat might be visiting them in her place.
On Carter's suggestion to visit, Elliot accompanies them so Mao can stay safe. The couple is grateful to him for his help.
[6] Enter the Eastern Cave Again
Enter the Eastern Caves and go towards the ladder. A cutscene will play. Be careful, as after the cutscene ends, monsters will attack you!
Carter will ask Mao about her parents, and Mao says she was very much loved. She at one point was given a flower crown that made her very happy, but it made her mom burst into tears. She didn't understand why her mom did that before, but now she does.
Mao will then smell Kiwiberries, a fragrance that her parents loved. Carter suggests they go pick up some Kiwiberries and place them at her parents' graves.
Since the Kiwiberries are to the south, go south. There will be a few monsters in the way, but you can ignore all of them if you want.
[7] Obtain some Kiwiberries
The Kiwiberry Bough will be quite far from the cave. Mao sure has a strong nose to smell it from that far away.
The path to the tree is filled with monsters, and you'll have to cross a river to get to it. But there aren't any alternate paths, so you won't be getting lost on your way there.
At the Kiwiberry Bough, Carter mentions that the smell of the fragrance is unmistakable. For Mao, it's nostalgic, as her parents used to plant boughs around the house. For Carter, it also holds nostalgia. Soon after he met Mao, he brought home a Kiwiberry branch. But she didn't want him doing that, saying it stirred up memories. But then she almost lost him, and Elliot helped her realize her feelings for him. Now, Mao has realized how much he means to her, and this fragrance will remind her of her new family.
[8] Return to the Graves
Enter the cave and go back to the north exit to visit the graves.
Mao apologizes for having been away for too long. Carter suggests that maybe the cat led them here for a reason. She found Carter, and now she has a baby on the way. She understands how her mom felt with her, and she tells her dad someone can protect her now. She's no longer alone.
Carter swears to protect Mao, and says meeting Mao was the best thing to happen to him. And Mao agrees, leading to a heartfelt hug between them!
Carter and Mao thank Elliot for helping them so much. Elliot says he loves helping them and wants to help Mao, especially since she has a baby on the way.
Fragrance of Things Past Rewards
After the quest, gain access to the Starlight Sand. Since it temporarily raises attack and defense after death, it's very useful in difficult boss fights if you can't beat them without dying!
