The Kitsune Walkthrough | Ghost of Yotei

The most elusive member of the Yotei Six is in Teshio Ridge.

Gather enough clues about The Kitsune during The Yotei Six Main Quest to start this Atsu's Hunt!

1 Follow Nupur River to Teshio Ridge

・Go to the Central Ferry and talk to huci. You'll get A Journey North Side Tale afterward.

・Once the ferryman arrives, you'll reach Nayoro Wilds.

Optional: Before leaving, huci invites you to visit Husko Kotan. You can complete a few Side Quests there like The Heart of an Ainu, The Load We Bear, and The Legend of Opusnupuri.

・When you're done exploring the new region, just follow the Nupur River for the next Quest Objective. Call the Guiding Wind if you want to be sure.


Spirits of Teshio Ridge


2 Speak with the Merchants

・While traveling, you'll spot three merchants with their horses.

・They will ask you to ride with them in exchange for money, and you'll be rewarded 2,000 Mon upfront for agreeing.

3 Escort the Merchants

・The Merchants are heading to Red Crane Inn. Don't worry about the route, just keep following them.

・In the middle of the snowstorm, you'll be ambushed by The Nine Tails.

4 Protect the Merchants

・Defeat the enemies! There will be a cutscene afterward where you'll first meet The Kitsune.

5 Follow Your Horse

・Keep walking and follow your horse to find shelter. You'll reach a cave.

・Build a fire and rest for the night.

6 Travel to the Red Crane Inn

・Open your Spyglass and survey Teshio Ridge. You can inspect the Owl Mountain and Red Crane Inn.

Optional: You can go to the Owl Mountain to meet Master Enomoto to start The Way of the Kusarigama Sensei Tale.

・Head to the Inn to get some clues about your target.

Optional: If you want to keep exploring, you can also follow Golden Birds to discover Places of Interest!

7 Find a Lead on the Kitsune

・Eavesdrop on the conversations of other customers.

・Play Zeni Hajiki with the Clan Matsumae members. You'll get a tutorial on how to do this first.

・After gambling, they will advise you to talk to their commander upstairs.

8 Meet the Samurai Upstairs

・Talk to Commander Fujita about the Kitsune, but he won't help you. It looks like the two samurai from earlier tricked you.

・Return downstairs. They will also make fun of Oyuki who's playing Shamisen.

・Beat up the men.

・Commander Fujita wants to have you executed, but you'll be saved by Oyuki.


Blood on the Snow


9 Speak to Oyuki Outside

・Go outside and talk to Oyuki near a horse; she'll tell you more about The Kitsune and The Nine Tails, the group of shinobi that terrorizes the region.

・Survey the village with Oyuki. You’ll see how much damage the group is causing.

10 Follow Oyuki

・Oyuki will ask for your help. Seal the deal and follow her for a lead.

・Speak with her when you reach a Shrine, she'll explain that it's dedicated to the Kitsune. If you make a donation, someone will collect the offering. Give 200 Mon or choose "I'm not paying" option, Oyuki will donate some coins for you.

11 Stake Out the Shrine from the Ridge

・Climb the ridge and wait for The Nine Tails.

12 Follow the Nine Tails

・Hide in the tall grass as you follow them.

・The group will split into two. Follow the ones who took the left path.

13 Find the Nine Tail

・You'll see a cute fox there but the shinobi you're looking for will ambush you again.

・Defeat them all and interrogate the last one.

・With the help of Oyuki, you'll get your next lead with the map she found on one of the shinobi's shoes.

14 Travel to the Location on the Nine Tail's Map

・Your next destination is near the Crimson Forest.

15 Puzzle: Solve How to Enter the Nine Tails Hideout

・Pick up the torch and light up the two lanterns with fox statues on top of them.

16 Investigate the Nine Tails Hideout

・Crawl under the entrance and explore the hideout.

・You'll fight with some shinobi along the way.

17 Puzzle: Find a Way Forward

・Open the gate by finding the two hidden fox statues (one next to a tree and the other by a rock).

・Pick them up and place them on the pedestals by the gate.

18 Investigate the Nine Tails Hideout

・Continue climbing up until you reach the hideout.

・Head inside and examine the scroll.

・Defeat the Nine Tail shinobi that tries to stop you.

19 Puzzle: Investigate the Cipher

・Make a copy of The Nine Tails' Cipher. Follow the broken lines to complete this.

20 Leave the Building

・Go outside and use the cipher as a guide. Interact with the left statue to open the door.

・Defeat the Nine Tail members.

21 Puzzle: Find a Way to the Upper Building

・The cipher you got will be helpful here again! Check the markings on the central fox statue, as those symbols provide the solution for positioning the four movable statues.

Solution:

Leftmost: Turn to face Right (→)

Left: Turn to face Forward (↓)

Right: Turn to face Backward (↑)

Rightmost: Turn to face Left (←)

22 Investigate the Upper Building

・Climb the ladder and collect the displayed Nine Tail Armor, Nine Tail Acolyte Mask, and Nine Tail Acolyte Headband. The full set will be automatically equipped.

23 Exit the Nine Tails Hideout

・Just like earlier, interact with the object that has the 'engage' symbol to leave this area.


The Way of the Shamisen


24 Find Oyuki at the Red Crane Inn

・Return to the Red Crane Inn and talk to Oyuki for the next steps.

25 Follow Oyuki

・Go upstairs and follow Oyuki through a secret passage to spy on Commander Fujita.

26 Wait for Oyuki

・When the distraction arrives, quietly head inside the room and look for clues.

27 Search for Clues on the Matsumae Informant

・You will need to check quite a few notes lying around, but the key clue is on top of the desk at the end of the room.

28 Follow Oyuki

・They are meeting the informant, Chosuke, at the Nakajima Sake House.

・Ride your horse and travel with Oyuki.

・Disguise yourself as a waitress and head inside. Oyuki will play the Shamisen while you eavesdrop for information about Chosuke.

29 Find Chosuke

・You'll find him upstairs. Talk to him and offer him sake.

30 Select the Correct Sake

・He wants something refined, elegant, and expensive.

・Head to the leftmost shelf to taste the smooth sake.

31 Follow Oyuki

・Check on Chosuke outside. He'll tell you to go to the Dye House.

・Travel with Oyuki again to reach the next location.

32 Puzzle: Search Around the Dye House

・Once you reach the Black Dye House, try to find the hideout.

・Head inside the small building to find the puzzle. There are different symbols on each lid.

Solution:

Place Statues: Put the fox statue that's facing left on the left pedestal and the one facing right on the right pedestal.

Rotate Lids: Do the same with the lids. Rotate the left lid to point left (←) and the right lid to point right (→).

Go Underground: Interact with the middle one to find the hidden entrance.

33 Search the Nine Tails Hideout

・The two of you will discover that they are keeping prisoners in the hideout.

34 Rescue the Hostages

・Defeat the guards to save the Black Dye Merchant.

35 Find a Way Deeper into the Nine Tails Hideout

・To explore the other side, interact with the fox statue next to the cell.

・Cross using the rope.

・Head deeper into the hideout until you see the remaining hostages.

36 Find the Other Hostages

・Eliminate some shinobi that you'll come across.

37 Puzzle: Search the Holding Cells

・Explore the area and find a building where you'll need to solve another kitsune puzzle.

・There are four nine-tailed fox statues here. You must rotate them to open the path:

・Do NOT interact with the Leftmost statue. It will summon an enemy.

・Second from Left: Interact Once to face Right (→).

・Third from Left: Interact Once to face Right (→).

・Far Right: Interact Thrice to face Left (←).

・Open the unlocked door to get The Kitsune Puzzle Box

Optional: Explore Ezo to find the remaining boxes. You'll get the Trickster Fox trophy if you collect all 12.

38 Return to Oyuki at the Dye House

・Bring the ornate puzzle box to Oyuki at the Black Dye House.

・The two of you agree to meet again.


Poison and Lies


39 Speak with Oyuki

・Talk to Oyuki and survey the area.

・You can inspect Chosuke, cannons, locked gates, and an opening at a fence you can use.

40 Reach the Fence in the Matsumae Camp

・Go to the Sentinel Forest Camp and execute your plan with Oyuki.

41 Slip through the Gap in the Fence

・Once the guard is distracted, squeeze through the opening.

42 Enter the Forest

・Confirm whether this area is the harvesting site.

43 Examine the Pedestal Under the Tree

・It looks like you're on the right path! You'll just need to solve another puzzle.

44 Puzzle: Find a Way Into the Forest

・Get the torch and light up three lanterns.

・The correct lanterns should have fox statues that match the ones at the tree.

45 Enter the Forest

・Place the Kitsune's Puzzle Box at the pedestal.

・Venture further into the forest.

・Defeat the Nine Tails.

46 Puzzle 1: Find a Way through the Forest

・After crossing the small bridge, you'll see another set of movable statues.

・Three nearby shrines will indicate the correct positions of the statues. Here is the solution:

Left Statue: Turn to face Right (→)

Middle: Turn to face Backward (↑)

Right: Turn to face Left (←)

・Continue exploring the forest, be careful with the traps!

47 Puzzle 2: Find a Way through the Forest

・To open the locked gate, swap the two fox statues on the pedestals.

・Defeat the Nine Tails again.

・To get across the bamboo gate, just interact with the fox statue next to it.

48 Lead Oyuki through the Traps

・Go left, then turn onto the right path when you reach the second stone.

49 Give Oyuki a Boost

・After helping Oyuki, climb and cut the bamboo to finally reach the harvesting site.

50 Find the Kitsune

・ Survey the area.

・Try to catch up with the Kitsune.

51 Defeat the Kitsune

・Fight The Kitsune, try to survive until you get a cutscene. He will poison you again which will end the battle.

・Before you get defeated, Oyuki will save you.

52 Hug your Mother

・You'll get some hallucinations while escaping with Oyuki. Try to approach your mother.

・There will be a cutscene afterward. It will show how Yone died during the night Saito invaded their home.

・Oyuki's real identity will also be revealed here. She was The Kitsune in the past.


The Tale of the Kitsune


53 Find Oyuki

・Go to the Old Graveyard and meet with Oyuki.

・There will be a fight between you and Oyuki. Reduce her health by up to half to complete this step.

54 Follow Oyuki

・Walk with Oyuki. She'll tell you more about what she knows about The Yotei Six.

55 Find Oyuki using the Listen Technique

・You can find her hiding behind a rock.

・Follow Oyuki again and head inside a building.

56 Find Incense

・Pick up the bundle by the wall.

57 Tend the Graves with Oyuki

・Light incense around the Old Graveyard.

・After this, Oyuki will tell you the tale of the Kitsune.

58 Follow Oyuki

・Ride your horse and follow Oyuki for your next training.

59 Listen for the Nine Tails

・Use your technique and find the hiding shinobi. Oyuki will give you a new Quickfire Weapon, Smoke Bomb.

・Assassinate the nearest Nine Tail and test out the Smoke Bomb!

・Defeat the remaining shinobi.

60 Speak with Oyuki

・After talking, inspect the bodies of the Nine Tails for clues.

・Follow Oyuki to reach the Abandoned Village.

・Defeat the Nine Tails in the village.

・Build a fire and camp for the night.

61 Light the Braziers

・Travel again with Oyuki in the morning.

・Return to the Old Graveyard for your last training.

・Grab the torch and light up the Braziers.

・Oyuki challenges you for another duel.

・Once it ends, you'll forgive Oyuki as the innkeeper's daughter, not as The Kitsune.

62 Find Oyuki

・Go outside and look for Oyuki. You can find her near the grave.

・Play a song with Oyuki before heading out. You'll unlock The Woman Behind the Mask Trophy after.


The Kitsune's Fate


63 Travel to the Red Crane Inn

・Return to the place where it all started to prepare for hunting Dojun, Saito's spymaster.

・Talk to Oyuki inside.

64 Search for Clues

・Examine the vomit on the floor, the hanged corpse, and the red writing on the wall.

65 Listen to Find the Stable Boy

・Climb upstairs to talk to the boy.

66 Follow Oyuki

・Mount your horse and follow Oyuki.

・There's another locked gate.

67 Open the Path Forward

・Light up the braziers and try to turn the statues.

・It won't stay put so Oyuki will help out.

68 Find the Kitsune

・Enter through the hidden passage.

・Use your listening technique to search for Nine Tails. Your ally can assassinate those who pulse white.

・Talk to Oyuki about the map she found.

・Continue ahead. There will be more waves of enemies outside.

・Open the door to finally meet Dojun.

69 Defeat the Kitsune

・Prepare for the boss fight! Dojun is like a sly fox, he has tricks up his sleeve.

・Watch out for his ranged attacks.

・Use your listening technique if he uses a Smoke Bomb. He will also change his weapons (Kusarigama to Katana with a Shield).

・Before landing your final attack, he will try to escape.

・Once you catch up with him, the final phase for the battle will start. Oyuki will be able to help at this stage as well.

When you finally kill Dojun, you'll get The Kitsune Trophy, as well as the Kitsune’s Mask and Upgraded Onryo Armor.
