The Oni Walkthrough
After getting enough clues during The Yotei Six Main Quest, Atsu will receive the Revenge Card for The Oni.
IMPORTANT NOTE: This walkthrough guide contains spoilers that will reveal major plot and story details.
1 Find Ishikari Plain in the Golden Foothills
・Head north to reach the location for this Quest.
・Before reaching Ishikari Plain, you'll be stopped at a Clan Matsumae checkpoint. They are looking for a Travel Permit.
2 Bribe the Beggar for a Travel Permit
・A Beggar will overhear your conversation with the guards and will offer a Travel Permit—but with something in exchange, of course!
・Donate some coins to finish this step. Short on money? Don't worry! Sell some items to the nearby Mask Merchant named Saburo first. You can also check out some of the items that he has for sale:
Fire Tengu Mask
Iron Mantle Mask
Ammo and Resources
If you don't want to buy his wares for now, you can visit him at the Oni's Breath Inn later on.
The Road to Ishikari Plain
3 Defeat the Oni Raiders
・When you pass through the gates, a group of Oni Raiders will ambush the Clan Matsumae.
・Lord Kitamori asks for your help in protecting the gate and defeating these enemies.
・Regroup once the battle is finished. Atsu will have a conversation with Lord Kitamori.
4 Mount your Horse and Investigate the Matsumae Horses
・Follow Lord Kitamori until you see dead horses bearing Matsumae banners.
・They were caught in a trap but the samurai riding them were nowhere to be found.
5 Find the Missing Matsumae Samurai
・Examine and follow the footprints near the dead horses.
・Climb the wall and head straight. You'll see some Oni Raiders holding the samurai prisoner.
6 Defeat the Oni Raiders
・What Lord Kitamori said earlier was true: these Oni Raiders enjoy humiliating and torturing their enemies. They burned the group of samurai alive. Give them a taste of their medicine!
・After defeating them, Lord Kitamori will say his men deserve a proper burial. You can respond with "You're not to blame" or "I can help".
7 Find Food in the Oni Raider Camp
・While Lord Kitamori is preparing the burial, go to the nearby camp and look for food.
・Grab the Salmon in one of the tents. Mushroom and Fish can be cooked at a Camp. Eating them can give you a temporary Spirit bonus and one random perk for a full day.
・Head to the fireplace and build a fire. Start by aiming for the balls of tinder. Then, pull slowly toward the flaming tinder to sustain a steady breath.
・Now that the fire is ready, you can cook the Salmon. Remember to flip the food to avoid burning it.
・Once the food is ready, there will be an important cutscene in the camp. It will be revealed that Lord Kitamori is Jubei. He survived and has become the Samurai he always dreamed of.
・Now that the siblings are reunited again, you'll earn the Twin Wolves Trophy.
8 Find Jubei
・Atsu will be worried that her brother isn't at the campfire. Just walk for a bit and you can see him nearby.
・Jubei explains that their deal is still on the table. He will escort you to Ishikari Plain and you'll join Clan Matsumae's hunt for The Oni. Reply with "They'll never accept me"" or "I don't serve Samurai".
・Even though they are reunited, there's tension between the two. Of course, they were separated for all these years.
・Mount your horse and follow Jubei to the gate.
9 Defeat the Oni Raiders
・Battle the Oni Raider Ambusher. He uses a burning kusarigama.
・Defeat the remaining enemies afterward.
10 Follow Jubei
・Open the gate and keep following Jubei until you reach Matsumae Encampment.
・Jubei introduces you as his "associate". You can choose between "I didn't expect you to lie" or "That I killed The Snake" as a reply.
11 Explore the Matsumae Camp
・Jubei will leave for a while to report to Commander Wada.
・Approach a Matsumae trainer that calls you. Agree to his Bamboo Strike challenge. You'll be rewarded with the Clan Matsumae Helmet and Increased Spirit.
・Talk to Commander Wada. He won't allow you to join but he does give you 2,000 Mon for helping them.
12 Mount your Horse to Leave the Matsumae Camp
・Before leaving, Jubei advises you to head to the market outside the castle walls.
・Survey Ishikari Plain using your Spyglass. Interact with the three white dots. (Island on the West, Market, and Castle on the Northwest.)
Optional: Complete The Way of the Yari Sensei Tale. This will be useful for hunting The Oni.
13 Explore Ishikari Market
・Before progressing the Quest, you can interact with Merchants in the Market if you want to organize your Gear.
・When you're done, check the Bounty Board and take the poster for The Traitorous Raider, Mad Goro.
・Speaking of the Devil, there will be some Oni Raiders interrogating a Settler. Save him and defeat the enemies!
A Mad Pursuit
14 Ask around Iwami Village about Mad Goro
・Talk to the man you just rescued. This Sake House Barman is a bit ungrateful, but he offers you a drink on the house.
・While you're inside the bar, eavesdrop on the customers to get more information about Mad Goro. Their conversation will be interrupted when Jubei enters.
・With Jubei's trick, the men will continue to talk again.
・The two of you will head outside and there will be a Standoff. Completing this successfully unlocks the Two as One Trophy. Defeat the remaining enemies after that.
・Follow Jubei again and head to the Iwami Village.
15 Investigate where Gunfire was Heard
・The Settlers in the ruined village give the two a lead about the target.
・Head to Bear Rock, north of the village.
16 Investigate Mad Goro's Camp
・Examine the burnt corpse on the ground.
・Then, inspect the broken Oni Raider's mask.
・A group of Ronin will approach you both. Looks like you're not the only ones searching for Mad Goro.
・Defeat most of them and interrogate the last one. You'll finally have a lead.
17 Ride to the River
・Ride your horses and head upstream.
18 Defeat the Oni Raiders
・Reach the camp and open your Spyglass.
・The twins will bet on whether Atsu can kill all of the nearby Oni Raiders silently. Choose the "What happened to your sympathy?" dialogue option if you want to get 15 Mon per kill for this mini challenge.
・It's up to you if you want to kill them head on or do the challenge.
・Investigate the corpse the Oni Raiders were checking out earlier.
・Open your Spyglass again to learn where Mad Goro is hiding.
・The bounty found the two of you first. He tried to shoot you both.
19 Capture Mad Goro Alive
・Sneak up the cliff while Jubei distracts the Mad Goro.
・Mount the horse and chase him. Be careful of the fire bombs!
・There will be a battle between you and the Mad Goro once you catch up with him. Deplete his health so you can finally capture him.
・Jubei will ask if he can interrogate the Mad Goro for a few days but Atsu will only give him 24 hours. The twins will separate for a bit after this.
Belly of the Beast
20. Meet Jubei near Ishikari Market
・Commander Wada refuses to let Mad Goro go. Atsu suggests they use the stolen musket and hold Jubei (the "golden boy" of the Clan Matsumae) as bait to get inside the castle.
・Jubei gives you the Mercenary Mask and Mercenary Attire, and this will be equipped automatically when you head to Ishikari Castle.
・You'll finally meet The Oni once again. Return his musket and follow him for your reward.
・The Oni will introduce you to Kanta. He will escort Jubei to his cell.
・Keep walking with The Oni until you reach a throne room full of treasure.
21 Examine the Oni's Treasures
・You can check out his treasures, interact with the scabbard on the right to progress the story.
・You'll be rewarded the Twin Wolves (Wolf Blade) and 3,000 Mon for completing The Oni's request.
・After heading outside, you'll be invited for the feast at night. Use this spare time to free Jubei. Inspect your surroundings and interact with the white dots until it lands at Kanta.
22 Steal keys from Kanta the Jailer
・Atsu will fail at the first attempt in stealing the keys, but it will end with a challenge to fight Kanta at the ring.
・Take the Bokken in the arena.
・The Duel with Kanta starts right away and he will charge at you. Be careful with his attacks because the Kanabo he uses deals heavy damage. Wait for the opportunity to strike his weapon out of his hands.
・While helping him stand up, simply pickpocket the keys.
23 Retrieve Weapons from Your Horse
・The guards will escort you to the stables but you'll need to rescue Jubei first. Get your weapon and silently make your way to the Holding Cells.
24 Reach the Holding Cells
・Avoid getting caught by Oni's men. They will be hostile when they see you holding a weapon.
・Climb the watch tower and cross to the other side.
・Keep hiding in the tall grass and use the Guiding Wind to find the correct path.
・You can also throw Sake Jars to distract nearby enemies.
・There's a captive member of the Clan Matsumae that will tell you the fastest way to the Holding Cells is up the ledge and past the drums.
25 Search the Holding Cells for Jubei
・Jubei's cell is near the hanging corpse. Unlock it using the keys you got from Kanta.
26 Climb the Cliffs to the Castle
・Break the loose bars with Jubei, squeeze through, and climb the cliffs to reach the castle.
・Reach the top of the keep by using the scaffolding.
27 Assassinate the Oni
・This plan won't go too well. As you enter the castle, The Oni "greets" you both. He realized your identity when you demanded the saya as a reward.
・Atsu was able to land a blow on The Oni but gets thrown away outside.
28 Escape Ishikari Castle
・Jubei follows outside. Other outlaws noticed your presence as well. It's time to escape!
・Call your horse and charge at enemies. This will cost 1 Spirit.
・Run away until you reach a safe area.
・Jubei and Atsu will have an argument. He believes dozens of lives would have been saved if she didn't focus on revenge.
・The twins part ways again afterward.
A Fiery Consequence
Optional: As your legend grows, people will leave offerings to aid the onryo's hunt for the Yotei Six. Check the Gift Altar every now and then!
29 Reach Mad Goro in the Matsumae Camp
・Return to the Matsumae Encampment and talk to the guard. He will refuse to let you in.
30. Find a Way Inside the Matsumae Camp
・You won't take no as an answer! Look for another way in.
・Turn right and go around the camp until you reach the bridge.
31 Climb Up to the Matsumae Camp
・Follow the path and use your Grappling Hook to swing across.
・Get to a high area where you can see the entire camp.
・Open your Spyglass and look for Mad Goro. Inspect the fence on the northeast and find Mad Goro in the middle of the camp. Next, examine the edge of the camp to finish this step.
32 Reach Mad Goro in the Matsumae Camp
・When mealtime comes, start your mission! Slide down and cross over to the other side.
・Squeeze through the gap and enter through the window to see Mad Goro's cell.
33 Find a Way to Free Mad Goro
・Make a deal with Mad Goro. If you let him out, he'll tell you how to get inside the castle again.
・Head outside and interact with the loose boards at the right side of the prison.
34 Find a Way Inside Mad Goro's Cell
・Look up and use your Grappling Hook to create a rope.
・Climb the roof and find the old patchwork. Mad Goro will destroy it.
・Help him pull the loose boards to get outside.
35 Follow Jubei
・Too bad that you got caught! Luckily, it was Jubei.
・You try to persuade Jubei but he won't budge.
36 Defeat the Oni Raiders
・The conversation will be cut short when Oni Raiders attack the camp. Help them out!
37 Defeat the Oni Raiders and Silence Their Bo-Hiya
・The first wave is done but the fight isn't over yet! Continue the battle and push the enemies back.
・After the coast is clear, tell Jubei that you'll deal with the Bo-Hiya.
38 Stop the Oni Raiders Firing on the Bridge
・You'll be fighting with the outlaws at the bridge alone.
39 Use the Bo-Hiya to Defeat the Oni Raiders
・Once the enemies are dead, strike groups of Oni Raiders with the Bo-Hiya.
40. Reach Jubei on the Bridge
・Go back to Jubei and help him kill more enemies.
41 Defend the Bridge
・Another wave of Oni Raiders will come when you reach the bridge. Tighten your grip on your weapon and eliminate them all.
・There will be a cutscene where the siblings meet with The Oni. His men will fire at them which will cause them to fall.
42 Follow Jubei
・After reaching the shore, follow Jubei back to the camp.
・Another cutscene will play, the twins will reconcile and agree to meet at the northern camp.
Twin Wolves, Twin Hearts
43 Meet Jubei at the Northern Matsumae Camp
・Once you're ready, head north to meet up with Jubei.
・Head inside the tent and you'll see him talking to Commander Wada.
44 Follow Jubei to the Shrine
・Jubei's scouts had a lead on Mad Goro. Just follow him to reach Azure Wind Shrine.
45 Find a Way to the Shrine
・Turn left and give Jubei a boost.
・While climbing, you'll see a group of enemies.
46 Defeat the Bounty Hunters
・Take care of these Ronins. You can face them directly or assassinate them.
47 Climb Up to the Shrine
・Continue climbing!
・The two of you will reach a burning bridge.
・Use the Grappling Hook to reach the other side.
・Clear the debris on the bridge so Jubei can pass through.
48 Find Mad Goro at the Shrine
・Go inside the cave and pull the loose wood that's blocking your path.
・While following Jubei, you'll fall when the bridge breaks.
・Head outside and climb the cliff to reunite with Jubei. There will be a short cutscene after this. The Twin Wolves are slowly getting close and vulnerable with each other.
・Climb the wall to meet Mad Goro. He's really a priest at this shrine.
49 Wash Your Hands
・Follow Mad Goro's instructions.
50. Honour the Shrine
・The three of you will pay respect at the Shrine. Doing this will give you the Charm of Hachiman.
51 Defeat the Bounty Hunters
・Mad Goro refuses to talk about his previous life, but some Ronins will disrupt your conversation.
・He'll quickly change his mind and ask for your help again.
・Before the battle, Mad Goro gives you the Oni's Flame. You can test this new weapon when defeating the Bounty Hunters.
52 Escape with Jubei and Mad Goro
・There are more enemies coming as you climb down the mountain.
・When you reach the bottom, Mad Goro will finally tell you that beneath the Oni's castle, there's an abandoned mine that leads to the sea.
・Jubei will fix the boat and you will agree to meet on the coast later on.
The Tale of the Oni
This will be the last part for The Oni Main Quest. Make sure that you're prepared!
53 Meet Jubei on the Coast
・Head to the Stone Jaw Coast and talk to Jubei by the campfire. He'll give you a Salmon and share his worries with you.
・Travel using the boat to reach the abandoned mine.
54 Climb Up to Ishikari Castle
・Keep climbing until you see a campfire. Jubei will make a torch using the Oni Raider oil.
・Follow Jubei until you see the exit.
・Squeeze through an opening to finally reach outside.
・You're almost there! But you still need to climb some more.
55 Free the Matsumae Prisoners
・Head inside the mine again. Be careful since there are more enemies here.
・Once they are taken care of, free the Matsumae Prisoners.
・Open the large door and clear the path for the prisoners.
・As you progress, you'll be able to save more members of the Matsumae Clan.
・Eliminate the waves of Oni Raiders to finally reach the castle.
56 Defeat the Oni Raiders
・After opening the last large door, there will be more enemies outside.
・There will be a cutscene once you defeat the Oni Raiders.
・Jubei will help the remaining Matsumae Prisoners while you head to challenge The Oni.
・A familiar face will show up at the castle entrance: it's Kanta. Defeat him to progress.
57 Confront and Kill The Oni
・Open the door and go inside the throne room.
・The Boss Fight against The Oni will have two phases.
・He will use the heavy weapon, Odachi. Try to parry his attacks and find an opening.
・The second phase will be more challenging because he'll ignite his Odachi.
・Focus on dodging his fire attacks and stagger him once the fire goes out.
・Win the battle to get The Oni Trophy.
After defeating The Oni, Atsu will make him crawl to Jubei and the Matsumae Prisoners. He says that he deserves a warrior's death, but the twins will deny him that. Together, they end his life.
