With their chunky bodies and stubby paws, beavers don't exactly scream "mountain climber." But one bold Eurasian beaver decided to prove us all wrong by reaching a lake 1, 395 meters above sea level and surviving a brutal winter there.
Not stopping there, this furry daredevil attempted the legendary Szpiglasowa Pass. Sadly, his alpine dreams ended in tragedy when he took a tumble off a wall, according to Tatra National Park staff.
Still, his adventurous spirit lives on. Beavers have since been spotted exploring Tatra Mountains, perhaps inspired by their fallen trailblazer. And who knows - maybe one day we'll witness a new generation of beaver mountaineers conquering the Carpathian peaks.
This mountain shelter, built in the early 19th century as an inn for wanderers, lost nearly 70% of its roof to a fire in 1970. Thankfully, financial support from the Fischer family allowed for its full restoration.
