How to Play Trio

Introduction

Introduction

Playing as a group is how most Gyldhunters choose to tackle Mistfall Hunter's unforgiving gameplay loop. Three players that divide tasks, cover each other, and fulfill their respective roles in ways that are just impossible in solo play. However, playing as a trio only works if you don't play as three fingers, but a weird coordinated three-fingered hand.

Running trios is generally recommended for beginners and farming loot, since a full trio can clear faster and relatively safer, making the arena world feel a bit more approachable. This guide will help you understand how to play and dominate runs as a trio.

Set up your Squad

Squad

To play as a group, either match with other players via the in-game matchmaking system or invite friends to a pre-made party. It's worth delegating roles and responsibilities in advance to gain a clear understanding of how your squad will operate.

The most common setup follows a typical frontline, DPS, and support lineup.

Frontline (Mercenary or Withered Knight)

Acts as the shield and damage sponge of the team. Responsible for keeping allies safe and creating space for the DPS and Support to fulfill their respective roles. Mercenary's sword-and-shield kit excels in blocking, parrying, and stunning, while Withered Knight has both supportive and defensive skills.

DPS (Blackarrow, Shadowstrix, or Sorcerer)

Clears adds, applies sustained pressure, and picks off targets from a safer distance. Sorcerer's longer cast times become far less risky in a trio, since teammates can peel attackers off it — something it can't rely on solo.

Support (Seer, Reverent spec):

Keeps the squad alive through damage reduction and healing over time, and often doubles as the squad's information and routing brain, helping decide which fights are actually worth taking.

Keep in mind that this lineup isn't the only viable option and players are free to experiment with different comps depending on their playstyles.

PvP Encounters

PvP

PvP in trios looks a lot different compared to solo. Due to the sheer number of players in an encounter, fights can be absolutely chaotic. Here are a few tips on how you can tame the chaos and come out on top:

[1] Coordinate

Coordinate

Good trios win with skill, while great trios win with coordination. Communication is more than just talking over the mic. You also have to use easily understandable language and callouts.

Assigning roles before starting a run and every fight helps keep objectives and instructions clear, making each encounter progress smoothly.

[2] Decisive Calls

Decisive

When making a call, make sure it is firm and decisive. Having unsure communication is a recipe for disaster in extraction games.

[3] Keep Updated

Updated

Keep communicating with the team regarding status and plans. Always check in on your teammates, while also regularly updating your current status and what you think you should do in the next few minutes.

PvE and Boss Fights

PvE

Clearing bosses is one of the major advantages a coordinated trio has over solo play. Community feedback generally describes them as tough but manageable once a squad learns the timings and attack patterns after a few attempts. A few trio-specific pointers:

[1] Spread out vs AoE attacks

Spread Out

Bosses often have large AoE attacks, which can devastate your group if you aren't careful. Split up when they unleash these moves, and regroup once needed.

[2] Stick to your roles

Roles

Tanks should soak damage, DPS should dish out damage, and Supports should, well, support. Tankier classes usually don't have enough damage, while both DPS and Support are too squishy to absorb any meaningful attacks. Stick to your respective roles to avoid causing problems for the team.

[3] Watch out for Company

Company

Boss fights are loud, and the sound of fighting often draws in rival squads looking to third-party. There are also signs when a squad is attempting a boss, so be wary of any potential surprises during and after the fight.
