Looting Guide Introduction

In Mistfall Hunter, looting is an integral part of the core gameplay loop. However, simply running around and picking up every item you see isn't a good idea. Inventory space is finite, and every extra second spent trying to loot is a second lost to the Gyldenmist closing in and other Gyldhunters looking for their next victim.

Instead of guns and bullets, you face off against monsters and other players with steel and magic. It has the same loot-driven progression as seen with other extraction games: spawn in the map, grab loot, and extract. Die before escaping, and you lose everything in your inventory. This guide walks through how to effectively gather loot and safely escape with your haul.

Core Loop

[1] Spawn In

Load into one of the two currently available maps. You can enter with a basic loadout or go all in with your most powerful equipment.

[2] Fight and/or Loot

Upon spawning in a random area on a map, loot containers or kill mobs to gather loot. Items vary in rarity, and stronger enemies have higher chances of dropping rare loot. Chests and breakables are also scattered all across the map, dropping items without needing to fight.

[3] Watch Out for Traps

Not every area is safe. There are dangerous locations where there are a lot of environmental hazards, while others may be trapped or observed by rival Gyldhunters. Keep your eyes peeled for any nasty surprises.

[4] Track the Gyldenmist

Like in any battle royale game, a shrinking zone caused by the Gyldenmist closes in over time and damages players who stay in it. Keeping track of it ensures that you don't let a good pile of loot lead you to your death.

[5] Find the Extraction Point

Upon finding one, you will have to fight a Returner Woodling to open the way out. Find and slay it to open the extraction gate and safely escape with your loot.

[6] Extract

Getting to the exit is only half the battle, as there is a risk of encountering enemies along the way. Make it through, and you'll have yourself a nice payday.

Loot Priority

Not all loot is worth the inventory space or the time it takes to pick it up. Here are a few rules of thumb to ensure an efficient run:

[1] Prioritize High-value Areas

Named areas tend to have higher-tier loot than generic areas, but they also draw more players in, so expect more risk and competition. If you're confident in your skills or equipment, rushing these areas could pay off.

[2] Loot Quickly

Speed matters in a life-or-death situation. Staying for too long in an area leaves you exposed and open to ambushes.

[3] Leave Low-Value Items

Don't greed for low-tier loot. Inventory space is precious, so only keep low quality loot if you have the slots to spare, or if you actually need it.

Risk Management

Having the ability to assess risk and proper decision-making is another key skill to have for extraction games. Here are a few decision points that are commonly brought up during every run:

[1] Worth the Detour?

High-value items in far and dangerous locations aren't worth chasing all the time. Weigh your current options and check how much the loot will affect safe extraction.

[2] Looking for Fights

Every encounter when you're carrying high-value loot is extremely risky. It is highly suggested not to greed for loot and prioritize extraction if you already have a solid haul.

[3] Fighting Bosses

You should only fight a boss when your build is sufficient and the extraction is still possible afterward. Winning a hard-earned boss fight, but getting caught out in the open right after is a common way to lose a big haul.

[4] Recovering Loot

Fortunately, you may get a chance to fight back to your corpse and reclaim your loot if you die to monsters or the environment. However, this option does not apply to deaths from other Gyldhunters, so tread wisely.

Common Mistakes

[1] Overstaying

The Gyldenmist and other Gyldhunters will not give you the courtesy to loot an area. Staying too long in one area will expose you to dangers, so be quick.

[2] Opening Everything

While opening chests grants tons of loot, it takes a lot of time and inventory space to hold insignificant loot that can be found in common chests. Similar to the previous point, this can end up as a waste of time depending on the scenario. Only loot the whole area if you're sure that it's safe and you have time to spare.

[3] Not keeping track of Inventory Space

Not paying attention to your inventory can easily cause it to fill up with the most random items.

[4] Chasing Rare Drops

Crossing the map and entering highly contested areas without proper gear is a recipe for disaster. More often than not, entering these zones unprepared will only end up in loss.

[5] Fighting Everyone

Fighting for loot is only worth it if you're sure to win, or have nothing to lose. Even if you do win, it won't mean anything unless you successfully extract with the loot.
