Great Jaw Behavior

The Great Jaw is a giant clam described by many as an underwater Venus Flytrap or Clamthulu. It is a creature that seems passive and harmless from afar.

Great Jaw Databank Entry

Great Jaw (tentatively Megamya sudacna, great clam that bites you). An enormous omnivorous clam with a a dangerous defensive/feeding strategy.

[1] Clam

Much like Earth's bivalves, the Great Jaw has two mineral shells bound together by powerful adductor muscles. The creature's main body, including its digestive organs, heart, and gills, rests inside the shells.

[2] Mantle

The Great Jaw's mantle (comparable to the outer skin found on squids) releases a matrix of bioplastics on which the hard calcium carbonate shell grows. The enormous size of the adult Great Jaw's shell may take decades or centuries to achieve. The interior of the mantle is lined with motion-sensitive eyes.

[3] Closure Reflex

When the tendons of the adductor muscles are disturbed, the shells start to close, trapping prey inside. The jaw then secretes domoic acid, a neurotoxin. Projected symptoms include nerve damage, short-term memory loss, and death.

[4] Mixed Feeding Strategy

The interior of the Great Jaw is lined with tiny coral polyps, which feed on sunlight using photosynthetic bacteria. The majority of the creature's food likely comes from photosynthesis.

[5] Lithium Pearls

The Great Jaw bioaccumulates lithium during its growth. Its body expels nodules to prevent nerve interference. Retrieval is recommended.

[6] Youth

The scanned index specimen is relatively young and no upper size limit can be established.

Assessment: a critical source of Lithium, but diving is dangerous. Avoid touching the tendons and ensure you have an up to date body scan.

Great Jaw Survival Tips

・Since this Leviathan is stationary and simply waits for unsuspecting prey, the most important tip is knowing how to avoid its trap: don't touch its tendons.

・Take note that the Great Jaw is also scannable, so make the trip worth it by scanning it first before grabbing anything.

・Be prepared before diving into this creature, as its insides are packed with tempting resources and materials that are hard to ignore!

・The Great Jaw can also secrete a powerful neurotoxin that causes nerve damage and will quickly drain the player's health.
